Ezemvelo KZN wildlife would like to acknowledge and thank the following organizations and people for their valuable contributions towards making this Symposium a success:
KZN Subsistence Fisheries Unit
The Steering Committee would like to thank Gillian Rhodes and her team of Community Extension staff (and Skhumbuzo Mkhwanazi, in particular) for their pivotal role in arranging for the beaded necklaces for the name-tags and the Symposium bags to be made by crafts groups comprising subsistence fishers (intertidal harvesters) in the coastal communities of Mbila (Maputaland) and Sokhulu (Zululand), respectively. The Subsistence Fisheries Unit within Ezemvelo, is funded by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and acts to support the co-management between subsistence harvesters in these communities and Ezemvelo for access to and sustainable use of intertidal resources. We are indebted to the women in Mabibi who made the beautiful necklaces, and the mussel harvesters from Sokhulu who made the very practical, reversible and recyclable, conference bags. We we hope that delegates will enjoy for along time as beach or shopping bags. Gillian and her team would be happy to facilitate orders from these women, and harvesters from other communities, as part of the Unit’s goal to assist subsistence communities with new and alternative livelihood opportunities.
Stuart Nixon Media Production is a small Pietermaritzburg-based business specialising in live audio-visual production of events, event videography, film-making, and graphic design. Stuart Nixon Media Production is also focused on equipping students with practical experience in the field of media production, and so two UKZN media and filmmaking students are assisting with the technical production of this symposium.
Big Beat Productions is a major production company based in Pietermaritzburg providing staging and technical supplies to the conferencing, entertainment and sporting industries. In support of this symposium, Big Beat Productions are generously supplying the technical equipment for the event at a reduced rate.
Midlands Meander Team. The Steering Committee would like to that the Midlands Meander Team for putting together the information packs supplied in the conference bags provided to each delegate.
Ezemvelo Design Studio – the “Whitehouse”. The Steering Committee would like to thanks the White House, and in particular Justin Govender, for all the work and assistance provided in the creation of the logos and branding used throughout the symposium.
Grasslands Society of Southern Africa. The Grassland Society of South Africa is gratefully acknowledged for assistance in sharing adjudicating techniques for presentations and posters for awards, as well as the contributions they have made towards the conference packs.
Sharon Price. We would like to sincerely thank Sharon for her professional and expert guidance and organization, particularly in overseeing all the evening events and of the stunning decor and arrangements for the gala dinner. We are indebted to her for her commitment to conservation. Also for her guidance on ensuring “all protocol correctly observed” for our esteemed dignitaries.
Lee-Anne Lowe. Grateful thanks to Lee-Anne for arranging the procurement for the wonderful T-shirts provided to the delegates.
Dominic Wieners. The Steering Committee would like to thank Dominic Wieners of the Ezemvelo IEM Planning team for committing to assist the Symposium Steering Committee with putting together a website that would be both functional with updated information, and also one that would encourage interaction from delegates and interested parties. The aim of the website would be to provide a reference to previous symposia, and guidance for future research directions with a summation of the proceedings, and links to videos of the presentations.
Steve McKean. A big thank you to Steve for all his hard work in setting up the adjudication system for the presentations as well the coordination of this process during the symposium.
The Organizing committee. The Steering Committee would like to thank the steering committee for pulling together all the detailed arrangements and logistics to sport the symposium. Without their support and hard work this symposium would not have been possible.
