Keryn has worked with black rhino ecology and population monitoring and dynamics since 1987, starting in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park then as Animal Scientist in Pilanesberg & Madikwe. Since “going private” in 1994, she has been the main compiler of regular, detailed Confidential Black Rhino Status Report Summaries, which analyse the performance of, and management impacts on, Southern African black rhino populations for the SADC Rhino Management Group. She is also member of the IUCN SSC’c African Rhino Specialist Group. She has developing standardized methods for black rhino browse availability assessment; assisted with developing standardize black rhino body-condition assessment guidelines, and materials and training guides for individual ID monitoring of rhino. She has done joint comparative research and on black rhino diet and browse availability characteristics the across Africa. She has done detailed field surveys on rhino habitats in many of Africa’s most important black rhino reserves together with local staff (these include Kenya: Lewa, Ol Pejeta New section & Sweetwaters, Ol Jogi, Solio, Aberdares National Park (Salient), Nairobi National Park, Lake Nakuru National, Tsavo West Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, Masai Mara. Tanzania: Serengeti: central and Western sections, and Grumeti and Ikorongo concession areas; Lake Manyara Ranch; Zambia: North Luangwa National Park, Northern Sanctuary area; Namibia: Waterberg Plateau Park; Kaross of Etosha National Park and parts of Damaraland Palmwag Concession; and in South Africa: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi GR, Tembe Elephant Park, Ndumo GR, Eastern Shores GR, Weenen GR, Pilanesberg National Park, Great Fish River Reserve, Venetia, Blue Canyon, and some other private Game Reserves.) Based on rhino performance, diet, habitat and browse conditions across African conservation areas, she has developed and is refining models of black rhino carrying capacity density and total browser density for the black rhino feeding layer, attempting to understand how other browser densities affect rhino density and performance.

Keryn is also a 3D CG graphic artist and animator, rhino being her most prominent subject (see
