Abstract:

This study was conducted with a view that the provision of tourism and recreation attractions contributes greatly to the social, physical and economic development in the Stanger-Mthunzini Districts. This study was also carried out with a view that tourism has a great potential of boosting the economy of the study area and the entire country of South Africa. Amongst the objectives of this study were to determine the adequacy of tourist attractions and tourism facilities in the study area, to investigate the awareness of these attractions and facilities to the members of the local community, as well as the level of involvement of the local community in decision-making processes. Collected data was analysed using SPSS. The findings of this study revealed that the members of the local community do not associate the development initiatives with their immediate needs and they do not benefit from the existing attractions as they do not use them due to lack of skills, exposure, disposable income and high illiteracy rates. The study revealed that the local community has negative feelings towards the available attractions as they did not take part in decision-making and others claim that they were evicted from the land where these attractions are constructed. This study recommends the involvement of the local community in decision-making and the public awareness to encourage the extensive use of these attractions by the members of the local community as well as to empower the youth and women by equipping them with skills required in the tourism industry in order to make sure that they reap maximum benefits and sustainability is achieved.
