THE MANAGEMENT OF BLACK RHINO WITH THE AID OF CYBERTRACKER

Abstract:
Over the years, Ezemvelo has contributed relatively large numbers of black rhino to the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project (BBREP) which is funded by the WWF. Ezemvelo has a well-run and very active Rhino Management Group (RMG), which now requires detailed data on black rhino populations. This detail is important in order to determine the success of the populations and for managers to determine which rhinos can be donated to the BBREP without negatively influencing the donor populations. In Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, it became very time consuming to provide the data in the detail that was required. However, the adoption of the CyberTracker patrol and biological data collection system, allowed one to develop a paperless data trail from the field through to end databases. This presentation follows the trail of black rhino sightings data from the field through to the Black Rhino Database which was designed in-house. Furthermore, the abilities of the Black Rhino Database in assisting in the management of individual black rhinos and populations will be showcased. The presentation will also outline what monitoring requirements are needed to ensure the success of the database.
