Abstract

In the battlefield that is our Protected Areas- intelligence and the ability to be one step ahead is a key element of effective law enforcement. The CyberTracker program has been successfully rolled out in Ezemvelo Protected Areas for more than a year now. The analysis of field ranger movement patterns in space and time presents an untapped resource for feedback to managers thereby increasing patrol efficiency, effectiveness and, hopefully, combatting poaching. We present comparisons of early and late records of field ranger patrol coverage in space and time to demonstrate the effectiveness of the program. We present a number of trends from analysis of field ranger movements and discuss how patrol effectiveness can be effectively managed. Furthermore, we present a number of analysis techniques used and discuss information gleaned from how and where field rangers move within their environment. Ultimately, we highlight the role of the analyst in the modern day conservation law enforcement team, and discuss lessons learned and challenges faced in the use of such a spatial monitoring program for assisting the management of law enforcement personnel.
