Abstract:

The South African National Biodiversity Stewardship programme – progress and challenges

Willeen Olivier

The Biodiversity Stewardship Programme is a relatively new programme that has, where it has been implemented, delivered results beyond expectation.  It provides security for the implementation of sustainable land management, as well as an off-budget mechanism to expand the conservation estate.  It was however not all plain sailing, and a number of lessons have been learnt.  This is an overview of what the programme is about, what has been achieved so far, and the expectations and possibilities, as well as lessons learnt during implementation.
