KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: Securing Biodiversity – Incentives, coercion and obstacles

Mark A Botha

Formal Stewardship programmes have been operating for over a decade in South Africa but uptake has been relatively low. Against this backdrop, compliance and enforcement of regulations aimed at protecting biodiversity and ecological infrastructure has been sliding, despite improving legislation. This keynote address looks at the factors promoting and hindering success, and suggests perennial obstacles that need to be overcome. In particular, financial and economic incentives could be significantly enhanced, keener enforcement paired with direct assistance, and sharper extension models developed. Some provocative suggestions will be defended
