Abstract:

Rhino poaching Calves and Casualties. Do they count?

Karen Trendler

The Rhino Poaching crisis is producing ‘casualties’ in addition to the rhino being killed. The acknowledged casualties include orphaned and frequently injured calves, defaced rhino, rhino shot but surviving with multiple gun shot wounds and there are conservation concerns, challenges and questions about how to deal with these casualties. Less known but with as many conservation concerns and challenges are the indirect ‘casualties’ (behavioural changes, stress related and management mortalities).  Do the rhino poaching calves and casualties count? What are the impacts and implications and how are or should we be handling these as part of bigger rhino conservation and poaching crisis picture?
