South Africa is signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and is committed to the implementation of a national strategy to conserve plants that aligns with the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. With 6% of the world’s plant diversity and strong botanical and conservation capacity, South Africa is well placed to make a significant contribution to plant conservation globally. SA’s Strategy for Plant Conservation is nationally relevant and aligns with and is incorporated into South Africa’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). Through the development of this strategy, a network of botanists has been developed that includes conservation agencies, non-governmental organisations and academic institutions. This is an open and growing network and welcomes additional participants.
This session will include presentations from the Botanical Society of South Africa, updates on citizen science projects, and projects within conservation areas. Additional presentations will be considered for the session – submit your abstracts for consideration online and choose the Theme – Special Session: Contributing to the National Plant Conservation Strategy.
